Skewed intersections, Victoria

Intersections where a side road meets the through road at less than 70°, outside the Austroads range of 70–110°. Measured on Vicmap Transport road centrelines. A design screen, not a risk score.

A skewed intersection is one where the roads meet well away from a right angle. This map locates them across Victoria.

–intersections shown

Angle band Severe: under 45° Moderate: 45–60° Mild: 60–70° (less certain)

Junction type T: side road meets a through road X: crossroads or more legs Y: fork with no through road

Injury crashes at these intersections, 2020–2024

Show intersections with at least

Police-reported injury crashes only, coded as a cross, T, Y or multiple intersection and matched within 30 m. Mid-block crashes are excluded. Counts, not rates: there is no traffic volume, so this is not a risk ranking or a priority list. Source: Victoria Road Crash Data, Department of Transport and Planning (CC BY 4.0).

By default at least one road is a highway, arterial, sub-arterial or collector.

How this was made

Roads: Vicmap Transport TR_ROAD, operational, named roads of class 1–6 (highway to minor road). Unnamed roads, freeways, ramps, slip lanes, roundabouts and named service, bus-access, slip and car-park roads are not used.
Intersection: a network node where at least three legs of at least two differently named roads meet. Nodes touching a slip lane, ramp, freeway, roundabout, bridge, tunnel or service-road segment (bridge and tunnel ends are usually grade separations), and nodes within 50 m of a roundabout, are excluded.
Angle: each road's direction is taken along its approach, from 20 m to 80 m out, following the same-named road through short links such as the median crossing of a divided road. The through road is the same-named pair of legs closest to a straight line (at least 120°, so a through road that bends at the junction still counts). The angle is the acute angle between the side road and the through road's average direction (T and X). Where there is no through road (Y), it is the angle between the two roads of the fork. Intersections under 15° (mostly mapping overlaps) and those whose near (10–50 m) and far (20–80 m) directions differ by more than 15° are excluded. Nodes within 25 m with the same set of road names, such as both carriageways of a divided road, are shown once.
Accuracy: angles come from mapped centrelines, so a few degrees of error is normal. Results in the mild band (60–70°) sit close to the guidance limit and are the least certain.
Guidance: Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 4A recommends intersecting angles between 70° and 110°.
Traffic signals: DTP SCATS traffic signal sites (intersection type, May 2026) within 40 m of the intersection. Pedestrian-only signals are not counted.
Land use: VLUIS 2021/22 land-use classes within 30 m. "Agricultural" means cropping, grazing, dairy, horticulture, vineyards, specialised livestock or aquaculture make up at least half of the parcel area.
Land tenure: VLUIS 2021/22 release 3 (DEECA). Within 30 m of the intersection, parcel area is split into Crown tenure and Freehold; "Crown land" means Crown is at least half of that area. Freehold is not necessarily private.
Crashes: Victoria Road Crash Data (DTP), injury crashes from 2020 to 2024 whose road geometry is coded as an intersection, grouped as Fatal, Serious Injury and Other Injury.

Not a risk score. Angles come from a 1:25,000 centreline network, not survey. Crash counts are not adjusted for traffic volume. In our own check, a pooled comparison of skewed and right-angle intersections changed direction once split by road class and number of legs, so it was confounded and is not published.
